Hyperthermia

A Dogs temperature should range between 38.3 – 38.7 C. When body temperature elevates above the accepted normal range (39°C) hyperthermia, or heat stroke, occurs which can lead to multiple organ disfunction.

Predisposing factors:

– Hot weather
– Dry conditions
– Age
– Size of Animal
– Weight

Symptoms include:

– Panting
– Red or Pale gums
– Thick, sticky saliva
– Depression
– Weakness
– Vomiting
– Diarrhoea
– Collapse
– Loss of consciousness
– Seizures

First Aid:

Mild hyperthermia
Apply cool water (for very small dogs, use lukewarm water), then increase air movement around with a fan.

Caution: Cooling too quickly with very cold water and especially allowing body temperature to become too low can cause other life-threatening medical conditions.

Severe hyperthermia
Contact vet ASAP.
